Life in Louisville, KY is synonymous with farmers markets. Of course, it’s a great way to get fresh, organic, and locally grown produce. It’s also a good way to get to know the farmers and if you’re lucky he might just save the best tomatoes for you next week. In Louisville, KY, there is no shortage of farmers markets in and around the city to get fresh from the farm produce and meats.

For many farmers markets, the food options are just the beginning. The market is where you find new friends, enjoy live music, discover local goods, unique fashion, homemade soaps, candles, flowers, coffee, food demonstrations, treats for the kids and the list goes on and on.

The Louisville Farmers Association started in 2019 as part of the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Movement. The goal of the association is to, “unite communities and support farmers markets, farmers and local food producers to create access to a just, healthy and sustainable food system in Louisville Metro.”

This group also makes it possible for Louisvillians to use SNAPEBT on fresh, healthy food at farmers markets. Some farmers even give SNAP recipients double dollars, so you can really reap the benefits of choosing fresh produce for your family. Low-income seniors are also provided with SFMNP credit to purchase fresh, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs at certain farmers markets.

We’ve gathered a complete list of farmer’s markets in Louisville, and a few extras just outside the city so you can find one near you.

Shop Local, Buy Local

To ensure your farmers market Saturday is a success, there are a few tips of the market experts you’ll want to follow.

First, bring your own bags. Pick one (or two) comfortable bags to carry that are easier to handle than a tangle of plastic bags on your wrist.

Second, make sure you bring cash. While many vendors accept credit and debit cards, cash is definitely preferable and often easier than a credit card.

Double-check to see if pets are OK before you bring your dogs. Some markets don’t allow them.

Lastly, check the weather and plan accordingly. Many farmers markets go on rain or shine, but some of the smaller markets will close based on the weather.

Enjoy the sunshine, put on your walking shoes, and experience shopping local and meeting friends along the way at Farmers Markets near you!
